Gyotaku
Paper: Thai Unryu (various colors), 25 gsm

Gyotaku , pronounced ( ghio-tah-koo ).Japanese translation , Gyo -meaning fish , Taku - meaning impression. Developed by Japanese fishermen in the 1700''s before the use of cameras. These fishermen would make a print of their prized catch to display, and then , make a meal of their fish. Homemade inks, and Thai Unryu paper were used. A fresh fish is used to create the print. Once the fish has been inked Thai Unryu paper is used to pull a print. True to the ancient artists all of my work is completely unembellished (not touched up after the print is pulled),and fish are never killed strictly for a print . The eye is painted last bringing the fish back to colorful life. http://gyotakugallery.com
