Book Printing? When sensual and beautiful papers are married with hand printing and binding in a unique expression, the result is not only impressive in the quality of craftsmanship but stimulating in its ability to move the senses.? - Silvie Turner in ?The Book of Fine Paper? A book is meant to be read and handled. The paper used as its pages need to be strong, flexible and long-lasting. The weight of the paper needs consideration ? it should be thin enough to fold easily, yet thick and opaque enough to reduce any show-through. Another important quality is abrasion resistance. Because a book is handled so much, the surface of the paper must not pick up finger grease or dirt. If colored paper is used, the color must not rub off in handling, nor transfer onto other pages. It must be lightfast and not fade.

Both handmade and mouldmade papers are still being made today in the city of Fabriano following traditions that have made this the center of Italian paper making since the thirteenth century. More than 40 mills flourished along the River Giano, which by the l5th century, exported their papers throughout Europe and North Africa and were praised by Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael. The Fabriano papermakers can be given credit for several innovations in papermaking such as the use of gelatine instead of starch as a sizing and the invention of the hydraulic hammer for the preparation of the pulp. But it is the creation of the watermark, which is perhaps Fabriano's most important contribution, since its use allowed for the identification of a sheet of paper and its maker. Indeed, Fabriano is still widely known for the intricate watermarks that adorn their sheets including the photo-watermarked varieties that were used for Italian currency. Today, Cartiere Miliani Fabriano is a massive operation, still comprised of numerous mills, each with their own special grades of paper. The particular grain of the laid surface and the beautiful colors are the features of this acid free, 100% high alpha cellulose mouldmade paper. Particularly recommended for deluxe editions, bookbinding, drawing (pastel and tempera) and collage.
These beautiful handmade papers are considered the ultimate environmentally friendly paper made using natural materials like jute, flowers, grass, silk, bark, wool, straw, and cotton threads, banana, rags and other organic & recyclable materials. No trees are taken down and no environmentally hazardous materials are used in manufacturing handmade papers. These Japanese handmade papers are wood- and chemical-free and hence are quite eco-friendly.
