Mirri for Indigo

ilootpaperie Made the NSS Class of 70's Trading Cards Shine

Ilootpaperie chose Mirri Pak Silver 16pt for their National Stationery Show Class of 70' trading card. The reflection of the Mirri Pak along with the design gave the card the full 70's effect.

How did you come to select the paper you used? Have you worked with it before?

When we found out that we could choose any of the stock from Legion Paper - we eagerly scoured the offerings like kids in a candy store; there were so many and all so beautiful! Although we had never worked with the Mirri Pak Silver 16pt, it stood out immediately as we thought it really embodied the theme of NSS Class of 70s, conjuring up visions of disco balls.

What was your experience with the paper?

We loved it - it was really fun to play around with such a different paper stock.

How did the paper affect the design of your baseball card?

It really enhanced and elevated our trading card design - it allowed us to achieve a similar impact of foil printing but in a different way altogether. So funky! For another layer of pop, we were really excited to be able to experiment with printing white ink on the Mirri as well. We felt all these elements really took Pierre our Bandit's rookie card to the next level.

What print methods did you use and what worked well with the paper? Any particular challenges?

Our trading cards were printed using the HP Indigo Digital printer; we did ask Legion Paper to provide the version of the Mirri Pak with the sapphire coating that is required for paper used with HP Indigo printers. Once we got the paper with the Sapphire coating - the ink coated on beautifully.

BOSS Awards Tickets and Book Cover on Mirri Pak

The BOSS Industry Awards recognise and reward those in the office supplies and services industry who can demonstrate real excellence, either as individuals or through the successful performance of their business.

The BOSS Industry Awards were held on the 22nd of October at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham. The tickets for this prestigious event were digitally printed on an HP Indigo by 1st Byte in London. They were printed 4 colour process, plus white onto Mirri Pak for HP Indigo 415mic/ 280g.

The cover for the book of the night was also printed on Mirri Pak for HP Indigo using the same style of artwork and highlighting elements of the bulbs and text in metallic silver.

The tickets and book cover were printed both sides and gloss laminated after print, providing a glossy extra finish. By using Mirri, this allows for multiple metallic colours in one pass of the press, in this case silver and metallic blue.

Mirri Pak for HP Indigo - A Case Study

The British Book Awards create stunning metallic cover with Mirri Pak for HP Indigo

The ‘British Book Design and Production Awards’ aims to showcase the outstanding quality of book design and production within the British industry. The awards, in association with the BPIF, Oxford Brookes University and The Publishers Association, is the premier recognition event for British book design and production companies. The judges look for good design, free of typographical errors with a particular emphasis given to excellent layout and standards of typography.

Heena Bulsara, Events Manager for the BPIF, wanted to produce an awards book of the night to match the evening's creative atmosphere. Helena approached the team at Mirri with a concept of digitally printing the design onto a silver Mirri substrate.

Helena said; “We had lots of positive feedback at the awards about the books cover. The metallic material made it look really special and it meant we could create a really premium result without the need for lots of finishes.”

Jennifer Deacon, Marketing Manager for Mirri, commented; “Items produced with Mirri are normally printed litho, which normally involves a healthy amount of sheets for make ready. By using Mirri Pak for HP Indigo it means that small quantities or even personalised items can be produced with very little need for make ready material. Mirri Pak for HP Indigo is such a flexible product, in the case of the Book Awards 400 copies were produced, but it could just as easily have been 10 copies”.

Jennifer added; “The artwork was processed using the ‘Process Metallic Color System™’ by Color-Logic™ and printed by Color-Logic™ licensed printer Easibind International. The Color-Logic™ software allowed Easibind to create dramatic metallic effects through creating contrast with white ink quickly and easily."

Easibind International digitally printed 400 covers for the evening in a short space of time using their HP Indigo technology.

The awards were presented at a glittering event on Tuesday 20 November 2012 at the prestigious Grange St Paul's Hotel with all those involved in the industry, bringing printers, designers and their clients together to celebrate the best of British book design and production work.
